in leesburg, virginia. good morning, kristin. >> hey, andrea, the rain is just now starting to come down. we were driving out here and had no problems. just a little mist. nothing too terrible but within the past 25 minutes or so the rain has started to accumulate and i will go ahead and get wet here. what do you say? put this down. just over my shoulder if we pan down here you can see the water is actually starting to rush down this street. this is downtown leesburg. right by the loudoun county courthouse and, you know, it's not a ton of accumulation yet. no big deal but you can start to see within the past five minutes we have gotten all the rain you are seeing on the ground in the past five minutes. it is really starting to accumulate rather quickly. as we head to the heart of the morning rush, the rain is expected to continue. so you know how it is. anytime there is a little bit of rain it means more time to the morning commute. we are expecting some heavier storms out here in leesburg and loudoun county. so the roads could be a bit, you know, couldn't be so good this morning. so definit

other spots, also close to montgomery county and not too far from leesburg, between dardenstown and boyd. this one closing in on leesburg where you got all the hail reports from earlier today. couple rounds in leesburg. most of us have not seen anything but we're going to continue to watch for the development on radar because we do think we still after trigger coming in. that's why we still after severe thunderstorm watch. over to max hd satellite and radar. you will be able to see that not only the line that we had coming through earlier today, over to max hd radar, thank you, here it comes, bubbling up, heavy err down to our south. spottier here, but under our banner you can see another line. we're not sure what this is going to be doing a little later. it could hold together, maybe bringing us a few more thunderstorms. then one more patch through ohio. bottom line. we have to watch all of those areas. that severe thunderstorm watch could remain in effect until 10:00 unless it gets canceled early because the storms up to our north and west begin to weaken. this is probably the biggest

the moisture from leesburg to upperville. gets a little lighter to a moderate rain in winchester down to new market. we have a lot of rain to come. back on the weather computer. this is the one-hour storm total and some of those numbers have been in the inch-plus category to give you an idea. two inches even in the heaviest downpours in the last hour alone. back on the weather computer. we will hoe you the system that's coming in. it has been pouring a lot of moisture from the atlantic to the carolinas and through the mid-atlantic. we have several inches of rain, upwards of four or five in the northern neck in some areas and with the rain coming in we have a flood warning, bright green until 10:45. the entire metro from loudoun county down to southern maryland and fredericksburg including the dc metro until 10:45. flood watch until 5:00 and a tornado watch for think dc metro points east and southeast until 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. we have had doppler indicated warnings earlier. many to southeastern virginia and eastern north carolina. i think we will see more tornado warnings as we go in to

this labor day. other locations, include leesburg, woodbridge and fair oaks. the alexandria, leesburg and woodbridge locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the fair oaks location from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. the reason for all of these extended hours is because virginia's dmv is trying to dig itself out of a backlog of driver's license and identity card transactions after the state-wide computer system crashed for a week, 11 days to be exact. the governor is calling it an unprecedented failure and apologized for the inconvenience to dmv customers and its employees. >> i'm not happy about it. it's been a real disruption to employees and citizens. they have been working 24 hours a day with a large team of northrop grumman employees to get that done. i have ordered a thorough review to find out what happened. >> that review the governor was talking about will be a third party paid for by the contractor northrop grumman not the state of virginia. >> is in the last day of the extended hours? >> no. this is not the last day. if you don't want to be here waiting in lines on your h

at what you will experience if you leave in the next hour or so. kristin fish is live from leesburg, virginia. they are probably not thinking drought this time, are they, kristin? >> absolutely not. check out this incredibly spooky bridge i'm standing on. it is absolutely creepy out here. the things we do to bring you all the news. i'm telling you. we have been here all morning long. the rain is continuing to come down in a steady rate and right now this is the bridge at the goose creek country club. and right over my shoulder, if we look down here, this is goose creek. you can see the water is really starting to churn down there. we are nowhere near the flood stage. flood stage is 12 feet an we are at 1.2 feet. the creek is expected to crest tomorrow morning at this time at 5.6 feet. we are nowhere near flood stage here but we are starting to see the water churn from the rain and they are going to be some concerns when you head to the lower-lying areas of loudoun county. if we pan up a bit you can see that just above the creek is route 7. this is the leesburg pike. this is the road

things are in leesburg, virginia. kristin fisher is live tracking our storm alert. some are seeing rain, others reason. what are you seeing, kristin? >> we are seeing more rain now. it has been stop and start throughout the morning. when i first saw you at 5:00 there was pouring rain and then 5:30 no rain. and now we are in between. if you look at the street light you can see how much rain we are getting right now. nothing too crazy whatsoever but certainly enough to have some sort of an impact on the morning commute if you are heading in to the washington, d.c. area from loudoun county. also take a look at this video that our photographer gregos shot earlier this morning, just outside of dulles airport. you can see the rain is really coming down strong right there. and that's what we have been worried about all morning long is the flash flooding. could that type of rain lead to flash flooding. and here and throughout much of the washington area we are under a flash flood watch until 8:00 this morning. right through the heart of the morning rush. so this is indeed going to continue to b

manassas. winchester 64. steve in cross junction, 58 degrees for him. cumberland is 55. leesburg, frederick and culpeper at 61 this morning. bowie, 4 out in bowie. 70 degrees a couple of clouds out there. humidity is 73% and there's the winds out of the south at 8 miles an hour. ahead of this storm system, this one is tracking to the north. so much of the moisture with it up here. cold front approaching chicago and st. louis and oklahoma city. you can see the thin line of clouds there, down toe south. first to the north, there's the showers we are not seeing and down to the south this is tropical storm hermine if you will. tornado watch in parts of texas and had it had a well defined center. it came on shore last night. south of brownsville, northern mexico. winds down to 50. it will weak and move through texas and bring the moisture with it. could be eight inches of rain in spots. we will see if some of this heads orway potentially by sunday. that's what we will be watching and this front, this is the one that's coming here this evening near indianapolis. tomorrow comes through midday. bri

is it more than just a shower, it's up north of middleburg, near leesburg. these are pictures that have been sent to us from the leesburg area of the hail. we did have hail, three- quarters of an inch, even an inch, and that's what pretty much dictated the severe thunderstorm warnings. you can see all the white around the dog. that's a pretty good patch of hail. three-quarters of an inch -- or not three-quarters of an inch of hail but the size of the hail was three-quarters of an inch. fairfax county, parts of montgomery county getting some very strong storms. you can see back to the north of us up into western sections of pennsylvania, northern central pennsylvania, all of us firing up ahead of a frontal system. i think the front will get close enough to us tonight that we still have to at least include a chance for some showers, even some thunderstorms, and that will go until about midnight or so. technically we are under a severe thunderstorm watch. that's everybody under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00 tonight. maybe canceled earlier, portions, but not yet. but right now no activ

kristin fisher is live in leesburg, virginia, with more. good morning, kristin. >> good morning. the good news is by the end of the day we should know whether or not holiday religious displays will be allowed on the lawn outside of the loudoun county courthouse this holiday season. now, this debate took center stage last night at a public hearing before the loudoun county board. 100 people spoke out either for or against the board recommendation that would ban religious displays on the county courthouse lawn. supporters say it upholds the separation of church and stay, not to mention it makes for a much leads less cluttered courthouse lawn but opponents argue that the ban is unconstitutional. >> i would implore you, on behalf of our citizens of all faiths, to allow those displays to continue. these are the critical tenets of what our civilization is built on, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. >> reporter: so that is pretty much the line of argument for the opponents of the ban. we will hear what supporters had to say coming up at 5:30. the debate started last november when a comm

. courtney robinson is in leesburg with the details. what happened? >> about 30 minutes ago, supervisors here voted 8-1 to keep their current policy which would allow up to 10 groups to put out any display, whether religious or not, on a first- come, first-served basis. this is on the courthouse lawn. last november, the issue came up when groups, including judges, wanted to ban religious displays on the courthouse lawn. that is a longtime tradition here. one of those displayed was actually vandalized. this has become a battle between the freedom of speech and the separation of church and state. the county policy says that the court house is not the place for opened this place. many say that the law and served as the town center, a place for people to express themselves. last night, a number of people came out to speak, 45 in favor of the policy, five wanting a full ban on the displays. both sides were out here today to see how supervisors voted. >> i am glad that they looked at the policy. i can understand why people are concerned that judges suddenly decide that they could decide what can be
